ADHD Assessment

Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by patterns of inattentive and/or hyperactive-impulsive behaviours that are beyond what is expected for a child’s age.

 

Inattentive behaviours may include difficulty sustaining attention in tasks, appearing not to listen when spoken to directly, being easily distracted, and frequently losing things. Hyperactive and impulsive behaviours may include talking excessively, interrupting or intruding on others, and appearing constantly “on the go.”

 

There are currently three subtypes of ADHD: ​

 

  • Inattentive Presentation

  • Hyperactive Presentation

  • Combined Presentation

School-related difficulties for children with ADHD may include:

 

  • Difficulty sustaining attention during classroom lessons

  • Calling out or speaking at inappropriate times

  • Difficulty starting and completing tasks

  • Reduced persistence with tasks that require sustained effort

  • Disorganization (e.g., notebooks, materials)

  • Challenges with planning, organization, and study skills

  • Difficulty following multi-step instructions

  • Inconsistent test or academic performance

  • Difficulty remaining on task when working independently

  • Becoming frustrated or overwhelmed when tasks feel challenging

 

To obtain a comprehensive understanding of an individual’s functioning, an ADHD assessment may include a combination of interviews, standardized questionnaires, and, in some cases, cognitive and academic testing, as well as an examination of executive functioning and symptoms of inattention and hyperactivity/impulsivity. While cognitive and academic testing is not required to diagnose ADHD, it can provide valuable information about a student’s learning profile and help guide recommendations and supports for school.
